Arts Program:
Welcome parents and students!
I'm Mr. Wasser, Mauro - Sheridan's Art Teacher for grades preK - 4th grade.
I'm very excited about the deeply meaningful journey that my students are taking this year in Art; it's a journey into the realm of creative self expression, and learning & exploring the foundations of Visual Art. It's a journey that ultimately promotes and develops individualized modes of expression, personal growth & confidence building, and hands-on learning, not only in the Visual Arts, but also in academic areas such as reading, writing, math, science, social studies, and technology.
Visual Art is a powerful and rewarding means of creative self expression for children, it provides children with opportunities for expressing their thoughts, feelings, and life experiences in a positive and productive way. Art enables children to develop their imagination, to engage in critical thinking and problem solving skills, and strengthen their awareness of the world around them. Visual Art supports interdisciplinary learning in areas such as reading, writing, math, science, and social studies, promoting educational growth for children of all ages.
Mauro – Sheridan’s Pre K - 4th grd. Art curriculum is based on New Haven's city wide Comprehensive Arts curriculum, which offers a pathway to knowledge and skills aimed to develop our students into educated, creative, and well rounded young people. Our Art curriculum teaches students to think critically, it enables students to learn the fundamental elements of Art, and it empowers our children with the ability to use Art as a means of personal growth and self expression.
Our Pre K. – 4th grade Art curriculum consists of lessons that enable students to learn and apply the foundational elements of art; elements such as line, shape, color, form, texture, rhythm, perspective, and other elements of design that are the building blocks which Artists use to create expressive works of art. These elements become the building blocks that enable your child to create expressive and dynamic works of art that are uniquely their own.
The Pre K. – 4th grade Art curriculum has three central components that support your child’s learning here at Mauro – Sheridan:
Response to Art – students are introduced to a diverse selection of major works of art and learn the process of observing, describing, analyzing, interpreting, comparing and contrasting the visual elements of these works of art.
Creating art - students engage in extensive hands-on art making experiences, experimenting with a wide range of art materials and techniques to create art work that reflects personal experiences, thoughts, feelings, and imagination. Throughout this process, students develop hands-on skills that strengthen their overall art making abilities. When students create original works of art, they express complex ideas through their imagery and also develop critical thinking skills that are vital not only in Art, but also in academic areas such as Reading, Writing, Math, and Science. The process of making art enables students to engage in multiple types of problem solving and builds a strong sense of self confidence and self awareness for every student regardless of their age or grade level.
Making Connections – students engage in Art lessons that integrate Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Technology into their Visual Arts learning experiences. At the same time, these Art lessons also inspire students to make connections with their world around them and gain a greater sense of culture, community, and environment on a global scale.
